Late last year ArtWalk introduced ArtReach, ArtWalk’s art education program for elementary schools. ArtReach’s mission is to bring visual art programs into schools in the region, with our pilot program recently completed at Garfield Elementary School in the North Park area. Our next program is scheduled for this month at Loma Portal Elementary School in Point Loma. Patti Fox, ArtWalk artist, and Judy Berman-Silbert, ArtWalk Publications Manager, will again work with almost 400 students on collaborative art projects that, once completed, will be displayed throughout the school. 
In 2008, ArtWalk artists have the opportunity to help support ArtReach in an artistic way. Dixieline Lumber has donated high quality wooden garden benches to support this project. If you would like to paint a garden bench to 
contribute to this project, please send us a simple sketch of what you propose to paint. If you are selected as a bench artist, you will receive $100 to cover the costs of your materials. The benches will be prominently displayed at ArtWalk, and will be sold via a silent auction, with all proceeds benefiting ArtReach. We are expecting to receive the benches in early January and will need to have the completed pieces back to the ArtWalk office by late March/early April for possible publicity. In addition to giving back to the community through supporting ArtReach, your work will be featured in some of the ArtWalk publicity leading up to the event. Our most sincere thanks goes out to Dixieline Lumber for providing the benches.

Kick off the month of love by taking your Valentine to a romantic and intimate concert in Little Italy, featuring a champagne reception, hors d'oeuvres, flowing wine and the ever so compelling music of Bizet, Chopin, Lizst, Schubert, and other redoubtable romantics. Join the musical trio Camarada for an evening that would enchant St. Valentine himself! Love Poetry by Shakespeare, Dickinson, Cummings, Rilke and Rumi will complement the musical offerings, providing an enhanced perspective of the romance in the air during February! On Saturday, Feb. 9 the evening begins at 6:30 PM with a champagne and hors d’oeuvres reception at the Patrick Moore Gallery in Little Italy. The concert follows at 7:00 PM and features the world-class guitar collection of Don Young. Afterward, meet the musical artists over another glass of wine. San Diego Watercolor Society Juried Show
ArtWalk artist group San Diego Watercolor Society presents My Funny Valentine February 1 - 28 with a First Friday reception on Friday, February 1 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Approximately 80 paintings, created by SDWS members, are on display and for sale. Gallery hours are 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM Wednesday through Sunday and admission is free. 
Perry L. Meyer Fine Art presents the 2008 Winter Group Show featuring original limited edition etchings, lithographs, and other works on paper by important historical artists such as Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, and many more. The exhibition continues through Saturday, February 23. 
The San Diego Museum of Art is the final and only West Coast venue for a major exhibition of works by the great 19th-century 
American landscape painter Asher B. Durand. Kindred Spirits: Asher B. Durand and the American Landscape, which runs Feb. 2 through April 27, surveys over 50 paintings, drawings, and engravings by Durand, one of the foremost artists of his era who created the most memorable American landscape paintings of the mid-19th century.

KidsWalk participating group Mingei International Museum – North County is exhibiting Art of Play through June 29. Just in time for winter, Art of Play opens at Mingei International Museum — North County, 155 West Grand Avenue in Downtown Escondido. The exhibition draws on the Museum’s permanent collection of kites and toys from around the world, and features the kinetic — toys that move. On display are kites from India, Japan, Thailand, Korea, China, France, Taiwan and China in shapes as diverse as dragons, butterflies, centipedes and cicadas. Also on view are pull and push toys, antique mechanical banks and a group of delightful wooden toys from Central and Eastern Europe. Stuffed bears, bears on hand-held mechanical toys and a bear puppet represent the ursine world. Also on view are trains, cars, bicycles and airplanes. 
The La Jolla Playhouse is proud to present The Seven, where Greek tragedy meets hip-hop in writer/composer Will Power's modern adaptation of Aeschylus' story of a cursed family and a society unsure of how to free itself from war. Power's urban remix, with rhyming verse and diverse musical styles, shines with relevance through the eyes of a new generation. Contains adult language. Catch The Seven February 12 through March 16. 
The Old Globe presents the world premiere of In this Corner. In 1938, there was no bigger sporting event than the bout between German boxer Max Schmeling and American “Brown Bomber” Joe Louis. World War II is about to change how Americans view the world around them and this fight elevated Louis from African-American hero to All-American icon. In 1970, the two men reunite in the most unlikely of places: a psychiatric ward. The Cassius Carter Centre Stage becomes the ultimate arena and every seat is ringside as the decisive battle begins – for honor, country, and for self-respect. In this Corner runs through February 10.

W San Diego celebrates renowned photographer Mark Seliger with a celebrity photo installation, the first 2008 exhibit in W's White Space art exhibition series. Seliger's In My Stairwell collection consists of large-scale, black and white celebrity portraits, all staged in the stairwell of his studio in New York’s West Village. The exhibit is produced and curated by contemporary art dealer Guy Hepner, based out of Los Angeles and London. Currently hung dramatically from the ceiling in LIVING ROOM, as well as other public spaces of the hotel, Seliger’s larger than life collection includes candid shots of creative legends and luminaries like Julia Roberts, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Salma Hayek, Elvis Costello, Michael J. Fox, Muhammad Ali and Alicia Keys. The exhibit runs through February.

The Pecoff Gallery is a new member of the Little Italy art scene. Specializing in fine art and children’s books, the Pecoff Gallery is a venue for the voice and vision of artist Grant Pecoff and writer Layne Pecoff. Opened in April 2007, the gallery is a space of inspiration and possibility filled with color and creativity. Designed with moveable walls so that the fluidity of the art is mirrored in the venue itself, the art of Grant and words of Layne are constantly evolving and the gallery serves as a space to share their explorations into the imagination and creativity with San Diego. The Pecoff’s chose Little Italy for their new gallery as the community has always supported the arts, from the creative vibe of the boutiques to a family environment in the restaurants that are the landmark of Little Italy. Recently chosen to participate in the Children’s Schools Great Artists Series, the gallery will be the focus of a school field trip where the students will create a class project replicating a Pecoff painting. Grant says “the most meaningful awards and recognition I have received are the countless responses from people expressing how my paintings made them feel happy and uplift their hearts. I can think of no greater reward then that”. 
Every person should graduate with a dream in their mind/heart/soul that they believe in and have the confident hope of achieving through their own efforts and choices.
