The California Center for the Arts, Escondido Museum
The California Center for the Arts, Escondido Museum presents Innocence is Questionable March 1 through May 31. Conceived to promote and encourage dialogue, reflection, and social interaction about San Diego's artistic and cultural life, the exhibition, Innocence is Questionable, will celebrate the accomplishments of six renowned local artists: Jean Lowe, Ernest Silva, Raul Guererro, Iana Quesnell, May-Ling Martinez, and Yvonne Venegas, all recipients of the 06/07 San Diego Art Prize. By bringing awareness to the contemporary landscape and our place within it, each artist struggles with time and its impact on community, place, and the individual. By looking at historical precedents, mapping the physical environment and documenting the interconnectedness of all things, each artist explores one’s own history—how it’s constructed, where it begins and ends. Ultimately, what each of these artists question is whether or not the folly of the world is the responsibility of man?

Viva-city
Viva-City WHAT is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare? — excerpt from Leisure by W. H. Davies

This year, I’m desperately trying to occasionally hit the pause button, just for a moment, to stand and stare. Enrolling in a Photography class at San Diego City College is forcing me to do just this.

The snap of the shutter encapsulates an instant in time. Even though the picture is flat, tasteless, silent, and unscented, it can still evoke the imagination beyond what the eyes see.

I reflect…when you stand and stare, why use your eyes?

Read what several Downtowners are doing to explore more of their senses.
