Brenda York has over 25 years of experience in the visual arts. She graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in fine arts and has continued her education in the studio arts at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Idyllwild Arts and, most recently, the Athenaeum in La Jolla.

Her work in illustration and graphic design proved to be a major influence on her painting career. Brenda’s ability to create compelling compositions, as well as her use of striking colors, are a direct result of her years of study and work in design and illustration.

Brenda has won awards in regional and national competitions. Most recently, she received an Honorable Mention distinction for her painting, Vanishing Memory in the Museum of the Living Artist’s Regional Show. This year her paintings have been included in several juried regional shows at the San Diego Art Institute. Her work was featured in the April 2007 edition of the Presidio Sentinel titled Blogspotting.

In her series of abstract portraits, the emphasis is on capturing the intangible human qualities while deconstructing the human form. She is drawn to intense, vibrant color and a whimsical, narrative approach to painting. The backgrounds of her paintings are typically thickly applied saturated pigment that she then draws back into with symbols and words.

Brenda is a member of The San Diego Art Institute, The Athenaeum and The Daily Painters Gallery, an online, juried gallery. Her paintings are found in private and corporate collections across the country. Brenda lives and paints in the Mission Hills community of San Diego.
